Frequently Asked Questions
What is Cinderic Documentaries? Cinderic Documentaries Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in DeLand, Florida. The organization is dedicated to preserving history and traditional culture by recording fading places and lifestyles, including livelihoods rich in tradition, that are unique to Florida through documentary photography and oral interviews.
Why was the organization created? Cinderic Documentaries, Inc. (CDI) was established in 2005 after discovering that much of the state’s history and culture was vanishing or being overlooked and forgotten. The organization was created to enrich and preserve history and provide outlets to cite the significance of the common and dignity of individuals whose background were rooted in Florida’s past.
How does Cinderic Documentaries accomplish its mission? Through two areas: documentary projects and educational outreach. It is vital we remember where we have been through a means that gives an honest sense of unique ways of Florida life. CDI’s documentary projects evoke the true essence of the places and their diverse populations that make Florida unique. Without a supply of information and the ability to educate about the value of the common in society, many ways of life and groups will be overlooked and forgotten.
Through research, fieldwork, and exhibitions, the projects provide thought-provoking material to the general public. The culmination of a CDI documentary project is, not only an exhibit, but also a program/lecture to present the work and describe what was learned.
CDI also is involved in youth programming where multimedia technology is used to produce student-led presentations. If future educators hope to reach our youth, it must be done in a way that will engage their creativity and media literacy. We support youth in their efforts of creative expression on the relevant issues and concerns that are important to them. The student-created media projects tell the stories of today’s youth with their own personal vision. The purpose of our classes is to enable students to learn and develop skills to use digital technologies in a creative, technically proficient manner. The classes incorporate hands-on activities that allow students to think, create, and explore the uses of today’s media.
Why should people care about Cinderic Documentaries and its mission? People care about stories; their own and other’s. It’s the sharing of these stories and learning something about our heritage and culture that’s important. CDI believes that Florida and Volusia County is enriched when local communities use resources, including new technologies, to tell stories and listen to the unique stories of others. Our stories make us great as individuals. By sharing these stories, we become a community. By enabling these conversations, we all benefit.
Why are stories about the past so important? In studying Florida’s history, many of the important practices and events that make up its rich background tend to fall to the wayside. With wars and Indian raids, and notorious events cropping up left and right, it is easy to see how the practice of the everyday citizen can be overlooked. It is important, however, that the tales of these people, whose daily lives left so much to posterity to explore, are not lost forever to the forgotten landmarks of Florida’s past. Cinderic Documentaries has listened to stories of people out on front porches, in barns, living rooms, workshops, and fishing boats --- on the edge of their experiences. Their stories allowed a glimpse into their lives and the roads that brought them to today. It’s important to realize where we have been to know where we’re going in the future.
